The data reported in this paper were obtained in a study of childhood accidents conducted by the State of California Department of Public Health and supported by Public Health Service Research Grant (AC 00002) from the Division of Accident Prevention, US Public Health Service. The study was initiated by Leslie Corsa Jr, formerly chief of the Bureau of Maternal and Child Health, and was directed by Dean I Manheimer and Glen D Mellinger, formerly of the same bureau. The study was also made possible by the generous cooperation of the East Bay Permanente Medical Group and the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan.
